Enrichment Room 1st-2nd Grade

Welcome to the child development classroom for 1st & 2nd grade! Our program is an enhancement to what is taught in the primary school classroom. Students go to school to learn, but after a long day, kids still need to be kids, and our CDC program offers the best of both worlds…Learning discovered through play.

My name is Jennifer Dessert, and this will be my twelfth year teaching at Birney Elementary. I hold a Master’s Degree in Education, a Teaching Credential and a Bachelor’s in Psychology. I love reading, music, and watching my “kids” (students) grow into the incredible young individuals they are. Oddly enough, I am a fan of Hello Kitty, colored pens, and stuffed animals just a few things I have in common with my students. Part of the reason I love my job is that I get to be a bit of a kid myself when I interact and plan activities for my young scholars. Children really are like sponges. They are naturally curious and eager to learn. It’s just a matter of identifying what they want to learn and how they learn it.

Our goal is to keep your children safe, help them be successful in all areas of growth, and encourage individuality while supporting teamwork. We plan to teach life-long skills, such as conflict resolution, organization, and good study habits, in addition to, academics and the fine arts.

We support the current curriculum and provide assistance with homework on a daily basis. Through hands-on assignments, small-group projects, fun games, and outside activities, children succeed in a multitude of developmental areas. As educators, we understand that every child needs to have nurturing, encouragement, and guidance while embracing the ups and downs every school year brings. Our CDC classroom is like a second home.
